AI mammogram reading for early breast cancer detection, built with the Applied Innovation Center
Egypt's Baheya hospitals put a locally built AI mammogram reader into use in August 2025, with a reported accuracy of about 90%
Problem
Baheya is a charity breast cancer hospital in Egypt. Radiologists must read a large volume of mammograms, and the foundation signed an agreement with the communications ministry in April 2023 to apply AI to early detection.
Approach
The ministry's Applied Innovation Center developed the system with Baheya. It analyses mammograms and gives a preliminary diagnosis. It went live in August 2025 at the Haram and Sheikh Zayed hospitals, is integrated into Baheya's IT systems, and is described as learning continuously.
Results
Takeaway
Baheya integrated AI preliminary mammogram readings into its hospital systems. The sponsoring ministry reported roughly 90% accuracy without disclosing how it was measured.
