ADNOC
AI tools across the oil and gas value chain
ADNOC said more than 30 AI tools generated US$500 million in value in 2023
Problem
The Abu Dhabi state oil company runs large upstream and downstream assets where unplanned equipment shutdowns, slow reservoir planning, safety hazards and emissions carry high costs.
Approach
Since 2017 ADNOC has run two AI centres, the Panorama Digital Command Center and the Thamama Subsurface Center of Excellence. Many tools came from AIQ, a 2020 joint venture with G42, including Emission X for forecasting emission sources, SMARTi for spotting safety hazards with computer vision, AR360 for reservoir planning and Robowell for remote control of upstream valves. A predictive maintenance programme, CPAD, monitors critical equipment remotely across upstream and downstream sites.
Results
Takeaway
A dedicated joint venture built many operational tools over several years that together produced the value. ADNOC has not broken the US$500 million down by tool.

ADNOC said at its Leadership Forum that more than 30 AI tools generated US$500 million (AED 1.84 billion) in value in 2023 and abated up to one million tonnes of CO2 between 2022 and 2023. It described CPAD and four AIQ tools, Emission X, SMARTi, AR360 and Robowell, as part of a multi-year programme to scale AI.
The Journal of Petroleum Technology reports ADNOC's claim of US$500 million in value from more than 30 AI tools in 2023 and the CO2 figure. It describes each named tool and the AIQ joint venture with G42.
