Chi Mei Medical Center
A+ copilots for doctors, nurses and pharmacists on Azure OpenAI
Taiwan's Chi Mei hospital doubled pharmacists' patient load to 30 a day with AI copilots
Problem
Taiwan has 2 doctors per 1,000 people, against an OECD average of 3.6. Chi Mei, with 2,500 beds, faces heavy paperwork for its doctors and nurses.
Approach
Chi Mei began rolling out copilots built on Azure OpenAI Service in November 2023. They draft medical reports from notes, write nursing shift-change reports, consolidate patient data for pharmacists and flag drug interactions. In May 2024, the copilots were used about 36,000 times by 3,500 users.
Results
Takeaway
Staff adoption varied by job: about two-thirds of pharmacists used a copilot against about a third of doctors. The burnout result is a preliminary survey of about 20 nurses.
