Gemini-generated nurse shift handover reports

Manipal Hospitals cuts nurse handover reports from 90 to 20 minutes with Gemini

Problem

Nurses at Manipal spent about 90 extra minutes per shift writing and reading handover reports. The hospital group says the delay could contribute to fatigue and errors.

Approach

Manipal built the tool with Google Cloud Consulting after more than eight design rounds with nurses. Patient data from its TrakCare system flows to a Google Cloud data lake, a filter picks the facts relevant to the shift, and Gemini on Vertex AI writes a structured ISBAR summary. The team started with a minimum viable product, piloted it at one hospital, then expanded.

Takeaway

Filtering the data by shift before it reaches the model kept the summaries short and relevant. The rollout also began with one hospital and nurse feedback, then spread.
