Viña Concha y Toro
AI irrigation recommendations, satellite harvest forecasts and Smart Winery prediction
Concha y Toro saved about 18% of irrigation water on 1,116 hectares with a recommendation platform
Problem
Irrigation accounts for 97% of the water used in wine production, and climate change had shortened the harvest window from about three months to two or less. Harvest volumes were hard to forecast.
Approach
The irrigation platform started in 2018 on 30 hectares, where recommendations went out by email as an Excel file. It now links field geographic data to a weather network and sends recommendations automatically to the person responsible. A second tool combines AI with satellite images of vine vigor to forecast harvest volume. A third, called Smart Winery, simulates vinification to estimate fermentation time and wine quality, and runs in two of the company's wineries.
Results
Takeaway
The irrigation tool began as an emailed spreadsheet on 30 hectares and grew to 1,116 hectares over five years.
