OIV Fire Detect AI wildfire surveillance network
Croatian Forests expanded AI wildfire surveillance to 69 locations
Problem
Long summer heat increased wildfire risk farther north in Croatia. Emergency services needed early warnings from remote areas.
Approach
OIV developed Fire Detect AI with the University of Split's FESB for Croatian Forests. The system used AI video surveillance to detect outdoor fires in real time. An expanded network entered operation in June 2023.
Results
Takeaway
The expansion increased surveillance coverage. OIV did not quantify a reduction in burned land attributable to the upgrade.
