Fresenius Medical Care
Anemia Control Model for individualized therapy doses
Fresenius Medical Care deployed AI anemia decision support in over 100 clinics
Problem
People with end-stage renal disease required anemia treatment that stabilized hemoglobin levels and iron stores. Clinicians needed to balance treatment response against the amount of medication used.
Approach
Fresenius Medical Care implemented its Anemia Control Model in its clinic network from 2013. The AI system recommended doses of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents and iron therapies to support nephrologists' decisions. In November 2024, the company said the model was used outside the United States.
Results
Takeaway
The company reported better achievement of target hemoglobin levels with lower ESA requirements. It did not quantify those clinical improvements in its announcement.
