Problem

Engine maintenance teams needed consistent turbine-blade inspections while returning engines to service promptly. Standard borescope inspections required technicians to review imagery for defects.

Approach

Technicians captured blade images with GE Aerospace's AI-enabled Blade Inspection Tool. AI guided their selection of images for review. Following around 3 years of use on GEnx engines, GE Aerospace began distributing the tool to facilities and customers servicing LEAP engines.

Results

50%reduction in GEnx blade inspection time compared with standard borescope inspection, according to GE AerospaceCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

The tool changed which images technicians reviewed while leaving inspection work under human oversight.
