CS50 Duck coding tutor

Harvard deployed the CS50 Duck to help students debug code outside office hours

WorkingCompany's own claimOfficial ↗

Problem

Programming students could become stuck when instructors were unavailable. Waiting for office hours could interrupt their coursework.

Approach

CS50 instructors tested an LLM-based coding assistant with a small student group in summer 2023 and introduced it into fall sections. The Duck guided students through coding problems without directly supplying solutions. Students used it while completing final projects.

Takeaway

The assistant extended access to course-specific help while instructors retained in-person support. Harvard reported student experiences without a quantified learning-gain estimate for this deployment.
