AI production system at LG Smart Park in Changwon
LG's refrigerator plant forecasts its line 10 minutes ahead and reports 20% higher productivity
Problem
The Changwon refrigerator plant builds many models for Korea, the US and Europe on shared lines. Mixing models on one line makes it harder to deliver the right parts on time and to react to equipment problems.
Approach
LG Electronics developed its own production system that combines AI, big data and a digital twin of the factory. It collects and analyses plant data every 30 seconds, forecasts the state of the line 10 minutes ahead and schedules material supply accordingly. Overhead conveyors and automated guided vehicles move parts and doors. The World Economic Forum named the site a lighthouse factory in March 2022, the first Korean home-appliance plant to be selected.
Results
Takeaway
LG used AI across material scheduling and line-problem prediction. All figures came from LG's announcement at the time of WEF selection; no later measurement has been published.

Source summaries
LG announced that the WEF had selected Smart Park as a lighthouse factory. Its in-house AI and digital-twin system forecasts the line 10 minutes ahead from data gathered every 30 seconds. LG states that one line can build 58 models, logistics space fell 30%, productivity rose 20% and energy efficiency improved about 30%.
Dailian, citing LG, reports 58 models per line, a 30-second data cycle with a 10-minute forecast, a 20% productivity gain and 30% shorter line set-up for new models. Refrigerator capacity was expected to rise from about 2 million to over 3 million units on completion in 2025.
