Ethos AI-driven adaptive radiotherapy at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital
Life Oncology cut radiotherapy re-planning from up to two days to a single 20 to 30 minute session
Problem
When a cancer patient's anatomy changed during treatment, the patient could need a new scan and a new plan. That could take up to two days.
Approach
Life Oncology, the cancer unit at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Cape Town, launched the Ethos radiotherapy system in October 2022. The company called it the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. The system uses AI and adaptive treatment to adjust the plan to the patient's changing anatomy. It was first used for cervical, rectal, lung and prostate cancers, with other cancers possibly added later. The system is made by Varian Medical Systems.
Results
Takeaway
Adaptive systems move re-planning into the treatment session itself. The company gave no outcome data beyond the time per session.
