Custom video model trained on Lionsgate's library with Runway
Lionsgate's custom AI video model with Runway hit problems a year after its announcement, TheWrap reported
Problem
Lionsgate wanted an AI model trained on its own film and TV library that could eventually help create shows and movies.
Approach
In September 2024 Lionsgate announced a deal with Runway to build a custom variant of Runway's core model, trained on Lionsgate assets and usable only by the studio. A year later, sources told TheWrap that the library alone was too small to support the planned projects, and that using only Runway's model limited what the studio could do. Open questions on copyright and actors' likeness rights were also reported. Lionsgate said it was pursuing AI on several fronts as planned and would use tools from Runway and other firms in pre- and post-production.

Takeaway
A studio's own catalog of more than 20,000 titles was reported to be too small to train a video model on its own.

Source summaries
Reports, citing sources, that the Lionsgate and Runway model had run into trouble a year after the deal: too little training data, limited capabilities and unsettled legal questions. It gives the library as more than 20,000 titles. A Lionsgate spokesman said the studio was still pursuing AI on several fronts as planned and that the deal was not exclusive.
