Problem

Staff counted inbound and outbound cases and boxes by hand and checked cartons for damage. The work needed supervisors and was prone to error.

Approach

Mahindra Logistics worked with Chennai start-up Jidoka Technologies on a camera-based system that counts cases, parcels and boxes, reads barcodes and QR codes, and spots damage such as tears and leaks. Counts are reconciled against warehouse and ERP records. The system was piloted at a distribution warehouse in South India. Rollout to all warehouses was the stated goal.

Results

50%increase in supervisor productivity at the pilot warehouse, as reported in the articleCompany's own claim[1]
up to 20%labour cost savings at the pilot warehouse, as reported in the articleCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

The results came from a single-site pilot and were reported in the company's own words. A wider rollout was still ahead when the article ran.
