Computer-vision monitoring of bauxite feedstock

Metlen reported 10% lower bauxite consumption in a process segment after a camera-based pilot

WorkingCompany's own claim

Problem

Aluminium of Greece issued daily instructions about which bauxite types to feed into production. It lacked sufficient visibility to establish whether material handling followed those instructions.

Approach

Metlen developed a pilot combining computer vision with cameras at the stockpile and on loaders. GPS and cloud processing helped identify dumping events and the material entering production. The resulting information entered the refinery's PI system for process monitoring.

Results

10%reduction in bauxite consumption in a specific process segment, reported by MetlenCompany's own claim[1]
0.5%improvement in process efficiency reported by MetlenCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

The reported consumption reduction applied to a specific process segment. It was not a refinery-wide reduction.
