AI cameras identify phone and seatbelt offences
A National Highways-funded AI camera trial identified 458 offences in Sussex
Problem
National Highways and Sussex Police wanted to understand unsafe driving behaviour and the processing work needed for camera-based detection.
Approach
Sussex Police tested AI cameras at locations on the A21 and A23 from 26 February to 1 March 2024. National Highways funded the trial. Cameras identified phone use and missing seatbelts, but police did not process offences for enforcement.
Results
Takeaway
The trial produced detection counts without fines or prosecutions. Those counts did not establish a reduction in collisions.
