Portable AI pig weight-estimation device

New Hope's handheld AI device estimated a pig's weight in under 5 seconds at 98% accuracy

Problem

Weighing pigs on a scale means herding them, which takes time and adds biosecurity risk. Farms need weights to time feed changes, pen transfers and sales.

Approach

New Hope built a portable device that uses a big-data weight model with deep learning and computer vision. A keeper scans the pig and reads the weight without moving it. The third-generation device was used at farms including a smart pig farm in Chengdu. Researchers were working on a lighter, cheaper version for small farms.

more than 10 timesefficiency versus earlier weighing methods, as reportedCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

The weight data fed precise feeding and pre-sale feed control, so the gain went beyond saving time at the scale.
