Mia AI in breast cancer screening
Mia AI found 12% more breast cancers than routine screening in a 10,889-patient UK evaluation
Problem
Mammogram screening misses about 20% of breast cancers, and the UK screens more than two million women a year. Radiologist workload is heavy.
Approach
NHS Grampian ran the first UK prospective evaluation of Kheiron's Mia alongside routine screening, with the University of Aberdeen. Microsoft hosted the tool on Azure, and the UK Government's AI in Health and Care Award funded the work. A simulated AI-assisted workflow was used to model workload.
Results
Takeaway
Using Mia alongside routine screening increased cancer detection by 12% in the evaluation. The workload reduction of up to 30% was a model estimate.
