Problem

NOF's Metal Coatings Group develops materials such as anti-rust coatings through many lab experiments. It had no in-house materials informatics or data analysis experts.

Approach

Hitachi High-Tech supplied its MI Solutions and analyzed NOF's past study data to find experiment candidates likely to have the desired properties. Hitachi High-Tech data scientists supported NOF directly, so NOF could expand its use of the method without its own specialists.

Results

more than 50%reduction in the number and duration of experiments for specific research topics versus before MI, per the Hitachi High-Tech release (the release also words it as a cost reduction)Vendor case study[1]

Takeaway

NOF used an outside data science team on its existing experiment records. The saving was reported for specific research topics, not for all of its R&D.
