Predictive models and radiograph analysis across the dental plan business

OdontoPrev used predictive models and X-ray image analysis to target prevention and speed treatment approvals

Problem

The Brazilian dental plan operator wanted to lower its loss ratio, the share of premiums paid out in claims. It also wanted to move members from costly curative care toward prevention.

Approach

The company built AI tools that estimate which members are likely to need complex treatment, how they will use their plan and who may cancel. Computer vision reads images such as X-rays to find oral anomalies faster, which speeds up authorisation of treatments a dentist recommends. A manager said the predictions let the company target oral-hygiene campaigns and offer tailored proposals to members at risk of leaving.

Takeaway

OdontoPrev applied AI at several points of the plan, from prevention to claims approval. It gave no results, so the effect on its loss ratio is not known.
