Providence
Generative AI search within MedPearl referral support
Providence added generative AI search to MedPearl, a referral tool used by about 2,700 providers
Problem
Primary care providers needed guidance on specialty referrals and the work needed before referral. Patient records did not contain all the clinical knowledge required for those decisions.
Approach
Providence built MedPearl into its electronic health record and offered it to providers in January 2023. It subsequently added generative AI search suggestions and medical-acronym interpretation using a closed Microsoft and OpenAI platform. Clinicians reviewed and validated MedPearl's content.

Takeaway
The usage figures covered MedPearl as a whole. They did not measure the separate effect of its generative AI search features.
