Siemens
Vision-language-action robot pilot for accessory-bag packaging
Siemens collected 2,535 factory episodes for an AI packaging pilot whose reliability fell short
Problem
Packing transparent accessory bags required separating them from a pile and fitting their contents below the box's closing plane. Visibility and bag handling made the task difficult to automate.
Approach
Siemens fine-tuned a pretrained Pi0.5 robot policy for packaging at its Erlangen factory. The team collected demonstrations and added recovery examples after reviewing failures. Final evaluations still exposed grasping and placement errors.
Results
Takeaway
Placing a bag inside the box did not guarantee an acceptable package. Accessories left above the closing plane remained a frequent failure.
