Problem

Teachers in Karnataka were overwhelmed by lesson preparation, a problem the non-profit Sikshana had noticed for a couple of years.

Approach

Partner Microsoft Research India brought the tool, built on Azure OpenAI Service, to Sikshana in early 2023. It drafts lesson plans with activities, videos and quizzes aligned to the Karnataka curriculum, and teachers review the output. The pilot covered 30 teachers in 30 schools, teaching in Kannada and English, with expansion to 100 schools planned.

Takeaway

The result comes from a 30-teacher survey taken at the end of December 2023, so it describes a small pilot. Teachers kept control by reviewing every plan.
