EverestLabs RecycleOS robotic sorting cells at the Sunset Park recycling plant

Sims installed four AI robotic cells at its Brooklyn recycling plant, with the vendor citing over 90% pick success

In progressVendor case study

Problem

The Sunset Park plant in New York City sorts over 300,000 tons of glass, metal and plastic a year. Valuable material was missed on fast belts and contaminants stayed in plastics lines.

Approach

In late spring 2022 the plant installed four robotic cells running EverestLabs' RecycleOS AI software. Two act as last-chance pickers for valuable materials. Two do quality control on plastics lines. The software also gives operators data on plant activity, and four more cells were planned for early 2023.

Results

99%uptime cited for RecycleOS, per EverestLabsVendor case study[1]
greater than 95%identification accuracy, per EverestLabsVendor case study[1]
over 90%pick success rate of the robotic cells, per EverestLabsVendor case study[1]

Takeaway

The plant used robots for both recovery and contamination removal. The performance figures come from the vendor and were not independently checked.
