Problem

VA sought to improve detection of precancerous polyps during colonoscopy. Detecting these growths supported colorectal-cancer prevention.

Approach

The National Colorectal Cancer Screening Program began deploying AI-assisted polyp-detection devices in December 2022. By July 2023, VA reported installations across more than 40 facilities. It began comparing detection rates and procedure quality at facilities with and without the devices.
