Problem

Wallenius Wilhelmsen needed to reduce fuel consumption from its existing vessels. Captains had to choose routes and speeds as sailing conditions changed.

Approach

The company worked with DeepSea to test and develop vessel-performance software over 18 months before September 2022. Sensor readings and weather forecasts fed AI models that supplied route and speed instructions to captains. A fleet-wide rollout remained ahead.

Takeaway

The expected fuel saving was not a measured fleet-wide result. Captains received recommendations derived from vessel data and forecast conditions.
