Xcel Energy
Pano AI wildfire detection and incident location
Xcel Energy's AI cameras helped locate the Bear Creek Fire, which crews contained at 3 acres
Problem
Remote terrain made it difficult for emergency crews to locate and reach wildfire ignitions. Hot, dry conditions increased the risk of rapid spread.
Approach
Xcel Energy and CORE funded Pano AI cameras that detected smoke and sent location information to responders. During the June 2024 Bear Creek Fire, camera stations triangulated the ignition and supplied video. The Forest Service detected smoke simultaneously.
Results
Takeaway
The cameras supplied coordinates for a remote response; containment also depended on helicopter operations and ground crews.
