AI-assisted prostate brachytherapy planning
Amsterdam UMC began clinical use of AI brachytherapy planning after oncologists preferred AI plans in 98% of a blinded comparison
Problem
Doctors prepared prostate brachytherapy plans while patients waited with catheters inserted. Planning required balancing tumour dose against exposure of nearby healthy organs.
Approach
Amsterdam UMC and CWI developed software that proposed alternative radiation plans within minutes. Each option exposed a different trade-off between tumour treatment and healthy-tissue protection. Clinicians selected the plan, and the first patient received treatment on 17 March 2020.
Results
Takeaway
The reported preference result came from a blinded planning comparison before clinical use. It did not measure patient survival or treatment complications.
