Austal Limited

DeepMorpher AI for ship hull-form optimisation

Austal cut hull-form optimisation effort by an order of magnitude with its in-house DeepMorpher AI

WorkingCompany's own claim

Problem

Optimising a ship hull with computational fluid dynamics takes heavy computing resources and specialist knowledge. Austal wanted to explore more hull forms in less time.

Approach

Austal developed DeepMorpher, an AI toolset that fits into its existing design workflows. It ran the fluid dynamics work with high-performance computing from DUG Technology. Austal used it on monohull and multihull concepts for defence and commercial customers.

Results

by an order of magnitudereduction in hull-form optimisation with CFD, per Austal, using DUG Technology computingCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

The tool let designers try hull forms outside the company's usual product range with less specialist input.
