Problem

CareerBuilder ran its job search for careerbuilder.com and 4,000 client talent networks in house. Several teams spent time tuning the algorithms for relevant results, which took engineers away from other priorities.

Approach

CareerBuilder was an alpha tester of Google's Cloud Talent Solution in November 2016. It began powering searches on the talent networks in mid-2017. Since April 2018 it has served all job searches on careerbuilder.com and the mobile apps, plus email alerts for saved searches.

Results

18%increase in applications submitted in several top job categories on careerbuilder.com, per Google CloudVendor case study[1]
15%lift in users clicking through to view jobs sent in automated alerts, per Google CloudCompany's own claim[1]
41%increase in expression-of-interest actions from saved search alerts among users who clicked through, per Google CloudCompany's own claim[1]
40%increase in people clicking through to view jobs across clients' talent networks, per Google CloudVendor case study[1]

Takeaway

Handing search relevance to an outside machine learning service freed the engineering team to work on mobile features. The company reported gains across site search, email alerts and client talent networks.
