Problem

Residents had to navigate a large network of government websites to find services. Traditional search required specific queries and knowledge of where information belonged.

Approach

Indiana built Ask Indiana on Tyler Technologies' Resident Assistance platform with Azure OpenAI. It searched IN.gov content and generated answers with citations. Public beta began in June 2024, and full production began on April 22, 2025.

Results

197,000 hoursreduction in aggregate time spent finding information, estimated by the state against 2023/24 visit timesCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

The reported time saving came from website traffic comparisons. Less time on the site did not directly measure whether residents completed their tasks.
