YOLO-based construction-site safety monitoring
Kumho Construction reported at least 90% recognition in AI construction-site safety trials
Problem
Human-centered safety monitoring had difficulty covering construction-site hazards continuously. Missing protective equipment and entry into machinery danger zones required rapid detection.
Approach
Kumho's research institute began developing AI CCTV monitoring in the second half of 2021. Its YOLO-based system identified unsafe conditions and sent warnings to workers and safety managers. Site trials produced reported recognition of at least 90%; full commercialization remained pending in November 2024.
Results
Takeaway
The results concerned hazard recognition during trials. They did not establish a reduction in accidents.
