Problem

Manual measurement of lung lesions on CT scans added work during a surge in COVID-19 patients. Radiologists needed faster quantification alongside their interpretation of the scans.

Approach

La Timone's radiology team developed Smart Lungs with the Marseille Institute of Mathematics. The model learned from manually annotated scans. With Nutanix's help, quantification results became available in real time across radiology-department computers.

Results

10 secondsautomatic lesion quantification time, versus about 15 minutes manually, according to AP-HMCompany's own claim[1]
1600patients studied to assess the relationship between lesion measurements and clinical complications, according to AP-HMCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

Automated lesion measurement fed into clinicians' assessment of disease progression. The hospital's timing claim concerned quantification, rather than the complete radiology examination.
