REMONDIS Recycling
AI sorting of plastic packaging at RE Plano Bochum
REMONDIS began sorting plastic packaging into up to 6 colors with AI in Bochum
Problem
Recycling plants needed more uniform plastic feedstock for downstream production. Incoming packaging had to be separated by material and color.
Approach
REMONDIS commissioned a sorting plant operated by RE Plano in Bochum in February 2023. Equipment from Steinert and Sutco used multistage photo sensors and AI to separate packaging by material and color. The process also distinguished multilayer packaging and removed silicone cartridges.
Results
Takeaway
The sorting stage prepared more uniform material for downstream recycling plants. REMONDIS did not publish a measured purity improvement.
