Samsung Life deployed AI OCR to classify 47 categories of claim documents

WorkingCompany's own claim

Problem

Customers submitted claim documents as photographs with varying layouts and image quality. Conventional OCR still required staff to extract information manually.

Approach

Samsung Life worked with Upstage to improve document recognition and implemented an AI OCR system. It classified incoming documents and automatically extracted and entered information from selected document types, including medical-expense and prescription receipts.

Results

47document categories classified by the system, according to Samsung LifeCompany's own claim[1]
7key document types supported for automatic extraction and data entry, according to Samsung LifeCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

Document classification covered a broader range than automatic data extraction. The disclosed scope did not establish how much claims-processing time was saved.
