SandiaAI Chat on Azure OpenAI
Sandia Labs builds a secure AI chat tool in eight months for nearly 17,000 staff
Problem
Staff at the national security lab needed generative AI, but sensitive unclassified material could not go to public models.
Approach
Sandia began developing SandiaAI Chat with Microsoft in October 2023. It runs on Azure OpenAI in a controlled Azure environment, cut off from public models. Employees use it to write code, draft emails, automate workflows and build Power BI visuals.
Results
Takeaway
A closed environment let a security-sensitive employer open generative AI to most of its staff. Sandia reports the first month's usage but no total hours saved.
