Country-of-birth disambiguation for TB screening records
UKHSA used local language models to process approximately 10,000 ambiguous birthplace records each quarter
Problem
Free-text birthplace entries in GP registrations included misspellings and locations below country level. Staff manually resolved entries that existing lookups could not match.
Approach
UKHSA's Advanced Analytics team ran Llama-3.3 and Stable-Beluga-2 on its own computing infrastructure. Disagreements and unknown answers went to staff for review. The resulting countries supported subsequent TB-screening processing, while eligibility depended on additional criteria.

Takeaway
The models handled the ambiguous records left after simpler matching. Staff retained responsibility for uncertain entries.
