Academic Success Monitor for early student support
UNSW reported approximately 500 fewer student failures annually with its Academic Success Monitor
Problem
Students at risk of academic failure needed support before their difficulties became harder to address. Academic staff needed a way to identify those students and connect them with appropriate services.
Approach
UNSW developed the Academic Success Monitor with input from students and teaching staff. The system combined machine-learning predictions with AI outreach and human support. Microsoft collaborated on the project, and Sandbox supported its service design.
Results
Takeaway
Risk predictions fed into student outreach and staff intervention. UNSW reported fewer failures, although it did not disclose the evaluation design behind that annual estimate.
