Avanza
Photo-based stock checking with image recognition for retail clients
Avanza cut the work of stock checking and reporting by 50% with image recognition on staff photos
Problem
Avanza is a Spanish outsourcing provider that checks stock for retail clients. Staff went through shelves and counted and recorded inventory by hand, which was slow.
Approach
With Google Cloud partner Altostratus, Avanza gave workers Android devices to take geolocated photos of shelves. The Cloud Vision API, trained to detect logos and read text with optical character recognition, turned the images into data. Avanza then built reports and summaries in Looker Studio and sent them to clients. It was also looking at the Video Intelligence API so workers could shoot one video instead of many photos.

Takeaway
Avanza used off-the-shelf image recognition on a manual counting task and changed how its staff collect stock data. The story gives one figure and does not say how it was measured.
