AI optimisation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning in shopping centres

Citycon cut one shopping centre's energy use by about 20% in a pilot of AI-run building automation

WorkingCompany's own claimOfficial ↗

Problem

Citycon wanted to lower the energy use of its shopping centres and keep indoor climate steady. Energy prices and visitor numbers change through the day, and manual tuning of building systems cannot follow them.

Approach

Citycon tested an AI-based service in two of its centres in 2022 and 2023. The service compares a building's energy use with how many people are in it, the indoor climate and energy prices. It then adjusts heating, ventilation and air conditioning on its own, without manual work by Citycon staff. The company planned to bring the service to more centres in 2024. It did not name the supplier.

Results

about 20%reduction in energy use at one centre during the 2022-2023 pilot, per CityconCompany's own claim[1]
10%target reduction in energy use per square metre by the end of 2027 compared with 2022, per CityconCompany's own claim[1]

Takeaway

Citycon said most of the savings come in the first years, after which the AI holds the level. Tenants also reported lower energy costs and a better indoor climate.
