France Télévisions
Automatic live subtitles for franceinfo
France Télévisions extended synchronized franceinfo subtitles from 06:30 to midnight
Problem
Franceinfo provided human-produced subtitles during selected hours. Viewers with hearing impairments could not follow much of its live output through captions.
Approach
France Télévisions prototyped automatic transcription in 2021 and collected audience feedback during a 2022 trial. Its internal media platform converted live audio into broadcast subtitles. The service launched on 5 November 2024, delaying video to match the captions.

Takeaway
Broadcast integration required infrastructure work after the subtitle software was ready. Synchronization also required delaying the video signal.
