AI appearance check for station staff and crew
Keio put AI appearance scoring into full use at all Keio Line and Inokashira Line stations and crew depots
Problem
Supervisors checked the uniform and grooming of station staff and crew by eye at roll call. Judgements varied and pointing out issues was awkward.
Approach
Keio and Code Complete built a tool through Keio's JISOU open-innovation programme. Staff photograph themselves with a smartphone at roll call. The AI gives item-by-item ratings and an overall score that staff use for self-checks and supervisors use for guidance. A pilot ran in October 2025 in the Railway Operations Division. Full operation began on 1 August 2026 for about 1,500 frontline employees.
Results
Takeaway
The pilot measured awareness and the rollout survey measured manager opinion. No time or cost figures were reported.
