Tobu Railway
AI detection of people and bicycles left in level crossings
Tobu Railway put AI detection of people left in level crossings into full operation at four crossings
Problem
At crossings with no obstacle detection device, drivers were warned only if a bystander pressed an emergency button.
Approach
Oki Electric and Marubeni Network Solutions developed a system that uses general-purpose cameras and on-site AI with skeleton detection. It spots people or bicycles still in the crossing after the barrier has lowered and links to a special signal light that warns approaching drivers. Tobu tested it for about a year and began full operation on 16 January 2025 at four crossings on the Isesaki and Tojo lines.
Results
Takeaway
Using ordinary cameras kept installation simple and cost lower. No accuracy figures were published.
