SWISS

Operations Decision Support Suite for rotation planning and passenger management

SWISS operations controllers accepted nine in ten optimization runs from a new decision-support suite

Problem

Lufthansa Group core systems each supported single processes. There was no shared data store of crew, passenger, rotation and technical information to optimize whole flight operations. Controllers spent limited time searching for routine optimizations.

Approach

SWISS built the Operations Decision Support Suite (OPSD) with Google Cloud, starting in February 2020. The suite sits as a layer above existing systems and uses AI and machine learning to suggest the best scenario by cost or customer value. Controllers review a suggestion and run it in two clicks. The first use cases were rotation planning, which allocates and swaps aircraft, and passenger management, which covers missed connections and hotel stays.

Results

more than 1 million Swiss francssavings in the first three and a half months of rotation optimization, from fuel use and avoided airport charges such as noise charges, as stated by SWISS's head of operations planningCompany's own claim[1]
9 in 10 optimization runsoptimization runs accepted by operations controllers, against a target of 7 in 10Company's own claim[1]

Takeaway

Controllers still approve each change, so the acceptance rate is a direct measure of whether the suggestions are useful. SWISS set a target of seven in ten accepted runs and reported nine.
