UPS

ORION delivery route optimization

UPS's ORION route optimization was projected to cut 100 million miles and $300–400 million a year

Con resultadosDeclaración de la propia empresaOficial ↗

Problema

A typical UPS delivery route has around 120 stops, and the number of possible sequences is enormous. At UPS's scale, removing one mile per driver per day is worth about $50 million a year.

Enfoque

UPS spent about a decade developing and testing ORION (On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation), an operations research system that plans each driver's stop sequence. Rollout to US routes began in 2013; in 2015 the company sped it up and planned full US deployment by the end of 2016. The project won the INFORMS Franz Edelman Award in 2016.

Conclusión

UPS expected small reductions per route to produce large savings across its fleet. The figures were the company's estimates for full deployment.

Resúmenes de fuentes

[1]UPS3 mar 2015

UPS announces that it is speeding up the ORION rollout to about 70% of planned routes in 2015 and expects full deployment by the end of 2016. At full deployment it expects about 100 million fewer miles a year, 6 to 8 fewer miles per route, 10 million gallons of fuel saved, more than $300 million in annual savings and 100,000 metric tons less CO2.

[2]Transport Topics9 ago 2016

Transport Topics reported from a UPS demonstration in July 2016 that ORION was weeks from covering most US delivery operations after a decade of development and a rollout that began in 2013. It gives UPS's expectations of 100 million fewer miles, 10 million gallons less fuel and $300–400 million in annual US savings. It also cites the company's rule of thumb that one mile per driver per day is worth $50 million a year.

[3]INFORMSabr 2016

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences announces that UPS won the 2016 Franz Edelman Award for ORION, the route optimization system used by its drivers. It describes the system's effect as $300 million to $400 million in annual savings and cost avoidance, figures that come from UPS.
