Iltalehti emotion classification of news content

Iltalehti uses AI to label the emotions in its articles and balance its content mix against news fatigue

WorkingCompany's own claimOfficial ↗

Problem

Readers tire of the news or avoid it. Newsrooms had no simple way to see what emotions their content mix produced.

Approach

Iltalehti built an AI classifier that shows newsroom staff what emotions individual pieces and the whole content mix evoke. It labels content as positive, neutral or negative. It also tags qualities such as inspiring, constructive, entertaining, analytical or useful. Editors use the view to balance the mix. The tool won the INMA Global Media Awards category for Best Innovation in Newsroom Transformation for national media outlets on 22 May 2025.

Takeaway

The tool describes content for editors. Editors still decide the mix. Alma Media gave no audience results.
