AI tools in the Tamedia newsroom content system
Tamedia added AI headline, phrasing and image-description tools to its newsroom system, with journalists deciding on each suggestion
Problem
Swiss private media advertising revenue fell from 3 billion Swiss francs in 2000 to under a billion in 2024. Newsrooms had to work with fewer resources.
Approach
Tamedia's AI Lab built tools into the content management system. They suggest headlines and SEO tags, write image descriptions for visually impaired readers and flag awkward phrasing. A fact-checking tool was being rolled out. Journalists accept or reject suggestions and a person checks everything before publication. Tamedia also ran a nine-day in-house AI Academy for staff, and it drew three to four times more applicants than places.

Takeaway
Tamedia introduced the tools gradually over about three years and kept the editor as the final decision-maker.
