Problem

After the 2019 killing of Gdansk mayor Pawel Adamowicz, Polish publisher Wirtualna Polska wanted to curb hate in reader comments. It had relied on a live moderation team and third-party systems.

Approach

WP chose to keep comments open and built a Comments Management Platform on Google Cloud tools. AI models screen incoming comments at speed and ease the load on human moderators. WP said it had not used AI or machine learning models this way or at this scale before.

Results

44%fewer comments accepted than under the previous setup, per GoogleVendor case study[1]
66%more comments deleted than under the previous setup, per GoogleVendor case study[1]
7%fewer comments reported by readers than under the previous setup, per GoogleVendor case study[1]

Takeaway

Google published the results as changes against the previous setup. It did not state the period or the volumes behind the percentages.
