Moderna

Company-wide ChatGPT Enterprise rollout and merged HR-technology function

Moderna staff built thousands of custom GPTs, and the company merged HR and IT to plan work around AI

WorkingCompany's own claim

Problem

Moderna aimed to develop and launch many new products with a workforce of a few thousand people. Management treated broad, daily use of generative AI by employees as a way to do that without large-scale hiring.

Approach

Moderna first gave employees an internal chatbot, mChat, and in 2024 rolled out OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise to about 3,000 employees. Staff were encouraged to build their own GPTs, such as one that helps clinical teams review vaccine dose selection. By 2025 the company had combined its HR and technology functions into one People and Digital Technology department under the former head of HR, to plan which work goes to people and which to automation.

Takeaway

Moderna combined HR and technology planning to decide which tasks people and automation would handle. It has not published productivity results.
