TEPCO Power Grid
Company-wide chat AI and ten business-specific generative AI proofs of concept
TEPCO Power Grid rolled a chat AI out to all staff and moved about 90% of ten generative AI pilots toward live use
Problem
The grid operator maintains a mix of old and new equipment and has to pass technical knowledge to younger staff. Maintenance manuals can run past 100 pages, which makes answers slow to find.
Approach
Development began in the second half of fiscal 2023 with PwC Consulting. A general-purpose chat AI went to a limited group in February 2024 and to all employees in September 2024. Ten business-specific use cases went through proofs of concept, including a search tool for maintenance manuals and inspection records that shows the documents behind each answer, and a tool that finds manuals affected by a law revision.
Results
Takeaway
The company told staff early what the AI could and could not do, and adjusted use cases that were hard to deliver before starting.
